Philadelphia VA Medical Center apologizes for 6 years of wrong prostate cancer radiation.
At a recent hearing, per Inquirer Staff Writer Josh Goldstein, the Department of Veterans Affairs apologized repeatedly for incorrect radiation doses during treatment of prostate cancer cases.
Then to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission‘s surprise, Philadelphia VA Medical Center and the Veterans Health Administration shunned violation of eight radiation regulations.
Making matters even more controversial, Veteran Administration officials claimed reduced number of ill-treated prostate cancer veterans than they previously accounted.
What is a Philadelphia area Veteran to do?
A new methodology is available but not approved for VA use yet. Reported recurrence of prostate cancers treated at Philly’s VA Hospital continues and Michael Hagan the VA's national director expects more recurrences in the next few years.
Hagan ordered a new evaluation of all the cases whether under or over doses of radiation were the case. Re-analysis is prudent in light of Hagan’ comment the program obviously had its problems. Again, what is a Philadelphian area Veteran to do?
1. Continued following of this issue at Philadelphia’s VA Hospital is a must if receiving care there 2. Depending on your Veteran status, three levels of TRICARE Insurance is available to Vets. That could make treatment elsewhere an option.
3. Review TRICARE plans at http://www.tricare.mil/mybenefit/home/overview if you are a retired military person.
