Puppy and Dog Manners

Socializing a dog starts in puppy-hood typically. However, dogs at any age need socialization to insure they will be good doggie citizens. Similar to children, canines have age appropriate behaviors that need guided into good manners for a well-behaved pooch. There is nothing worse than a big dog jumping on guests or a little dog nipping at their heels.

Puppy prime socialization timing is from three to 12 weeks, imprint him with an abundance of friendly experiences, different and many people, places, situations, dogs, cats, kids and any place you go. Love, persistence and praise are lasting at this age.  Puppy classes by 4 months and basic training by 6 months is advisable for you and the dog. Owners are the alpha dog and pooch needs to know that.  You as master and socializing your dog are an ongoing lifetime commitment. Like us, bad habits can develop.

Adult dogs new to your house may need evaluated if any problems arise.  Same as with a puppy take the dog with you to meet and greet your world of friends, family and activities. Socialize with other dogs of all sizes and award acceptable behavior.  Any unacceptable behavior needs address and rehearsed for a positive outcome. Training classes before aggression becomes a problem is a good idea. Consult your veterinarian also.

Understanding dog behavior is helpful because a well-socialized dog is usually a happy, confident and loyal. Dogs learn your habits quickly and sense your attitude; he takes his queues for upset, content, etc from you. In other words, his behavior management is your job. Dogs want human relationship, with love, training and socializing they are great companions.
