Word Choices…Does What You Say Matter? Short of being vulgar does what you say and how you say it matter? You bet it does. Words that put your intentions on a slippery slope need to be avoided. Words that hurt need not be said.
Maybe I will return these shorts to Target tomorrow. The word maybe simply lets you off the hook; maybe you will make the return, maybe you won’t. Combine it with “tomorrow” allows two off the hook opportunities. Anyone in earshot knows it could be a month of Sunday’s before those shorts get out the door. Restated for positive energy-Today I will take these shorts back to Target; now, you are the leader of your intent. Listeners have no doubt that you mean what you say.
We will try to visit if the cow jumps over the moon. Oh sure! The kids will have graduated college before that happens. To say “try” is so lame and a stall tactic we humans created. “If “, is iffy, and ensures “try” will not get off the ground. You might as well plop into the old recliner for a snooze. TRY and IF are words for whiners. Restated for positive energy: We will visit now, because I know that cow and moon thing is a joke
I think it is time to clean the house, but the vacuum is broken. I think, translates to: I don’t want to clean this house no way, no how and “but” assures you won’t find a work-around for the broken vacuum. Restated for positive energy - Definitely, it is time to clean the house. Dust bunnies are out of control, and since the vacuum is out of commission the broom will work just fine this week. Words and phrases that yammer a lack of intention or commitment are; have to, probably, but, can’t, well, umm, want to, and need to. Listen to how these sound when you or others speak them. Words and phrases that shout you are positive and have intent are; I will, I choose to, today, now, I am, I will, finished, done, completed, and create. Use them and benefit the good results, responses and recognition that come to you. |
